About

Malayalam Dictionary is a free, open reference for the Malayalam language. Type a word the way it appears in a sentence and we resolve it to its root and explain it in plain English, with pronunciation, inflected forms, etymology, and audio. It currently holds 10,837 words and is growing.

How entries are made

Entries are imported from open, community-maintained lexical data, primarily Wiktionary (via the Wiktextract project), which is itself sourced and citable. We do not use AI to invent definitions; we import real dictionary data and present it clearly. Each entry links back to its source. Pronunciation audio, where present, comes from Wikimedia Commons recordings by native speakers.

Entries are not individually hand-reviewed yet. They carry the wording of their open source. As the project grows, editorial review and correction are layered on top. We say this plainly because trust is the point.

Corrections

Every word page has a “Report an error” link. Tell us what’s wrong and it feeds the correction list. The dictionary gets better because readers help fix it.

Accessibility

The site targets WCAG 2.2 AAA: 7:1 text contrast, full keyboard use, visible focus, and clean semantic markup with correct language tags on Malayalam and English. There are text-size and light/dark controls, and the site honours your device’s reduced-motion and increased-contrast settings. If something is hard to use, please tell us.
