Etymology
Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *eḷ-ney which inturn is from Proto-Dravidian *eḷ (“sesame”) + Proto-Dravidian *ney (“oil, ghee”), meaning sesame oil after undergoing a semantic generalisation at the Proto-South Dravidian stage. Cognate with Kannada ಎಣ್ಣೆ (eṇṇe) and Tamil எண்ணெய் (eṇṇey). Equivalent to എൾ (eḷ, “sesame”) + നെയ് (neyŭ, “fat, oil, ghee”).
