Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *kiẓank- (“tuber”). Cognate with Tulu കെരെംഗു് (kereṅgŭ), Kannada ಗೆಣಸು (geṇasu) and Tamil கிழங்கு (kiḻaṅku).
