Proto-Dravidian *mā (“animal, beast”). Cognate with Kui (India) ମାଜୁ (maju, “sambar deer”), Kurux माक् (māk, “deer”), Kuvi ମାୟୁ (mayu, “sambar deer”), Gondi మావ్ (māv, “deer”), Tamil மான் (māṉ, “deer”), Telugu మావు (māvu, “horse”) and Nihali māv (“horse”).
