Etymology
Inherited from Proto-South Dravidian I *miḷVku. Cognate with Kannada ಮೆಣಸು (meṇasu, “pepper”) and Tamil மிளகு (miḷaku, “black pepper”). Originally referred to black pepper before undergoing a semantic shift to its current meaning, chillies being native to the Americas.
