Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly from Indo-Aryan. Compare Prakrit *𑀝𑀺𑀧𑁆𑀧𑀢𑀺 (*ṭippati, “notes”), *𑀝𑀺𑀧𑁆𑀧 (*ṭippa, “note”), Gujarati ટીપ (ṭīp), Marathi टीप (ṭīp, “note, list”), टापरणें (ṭāparṇẽ, “mallet”), टिपणें (ṭipṇẽ, “to jot; to hit”). Cognate with Kannada ಟಪಾಲು (ṭapālu), Tamil தபால் (tapāl), Telugu టపా (ṭapā), తపాలా (tapālā), టపాలు (ṭapālu). Later Indo-Aryan (re)borrowings are concentrated in the West and South (elsewhere dak is used): Deccani ٹَپّال (ṭappāl), ٹَپّا (ṭappā), Gujarati ટપાલ (ṭapāl), Konkani टपाल (ṭapāl), Marathi टपाल (ṭapāl), Sindhi ٽَپالَ /टपाल (ṭapāla). Borrowed from Dutch de paal.
